How long have you been in business?
The WALT WHITMAN BIRTHPLACE ASSOCIATION was organized in 1949 and purchased Whitman’s birthplace to safeguard it for future generations. In 1957, the Birthplace Association gave New York State title to property.
What is your primary product or service?
Our programs and exhibits educate the public on Whitman’s life and times, explore his contribution to our nation’s rich cultural heritage, and inspire young poets and writers.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
One location.
Provide detailed directions to your location
Centrally located 30 miles from New York City. Long Island Expressway to Exit 49N. North on 49N 1.8 miles on Route 110 North. Or, Northern State Parkway Exit 40N, north 1 mile then left on Old Walt Whitman South, bearing ½ mile south. a left onto Old Walt Whitman Road by Gas Station on corner. Follow “Walt Whitman” signs. The Walt Whitman Birthplace will be on your right surrounded by a wood fence. From Huntington LIRR station (LIRR –Huntington Station-Port Jefferson Line), take S-1 bus south to Walt Whitman Mall. Birthplace is opposite mall on west side on NY 110 heading to (Amityville) (No service on Sundays).For information call Suffolk Transit (631) 360-5700 M-F 8am-4pm. . Or, HART-Huntington Area Rapid Transit (631) 427-8287. Or take a taxi to the Walt Whitman Birthplace 246 Old Walt Whitman Road.

Summer Hours June 15 – Labor Day Monday-Friday 11-4pm Saturday and Sunday 11-5pm Winter Hours Wednesday-Friday 1-4pm Saturday and Sunday 11-4pm Closed Holidays New Years Day, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day
